Like, it literally worked!! Also built a week before the shoot from good ol' raw wood, bright clean metal, built from scratch and planted on a hill here in Atlanta. Which is a problem when the story says it's been sitting out in the weather for a few years.

That part was my job. I went after it with hammers, axes and a blow torch, mixed a stain and worked it into every inch of that wood, then aged all the metal down to something that looked like it had survived a century of bad decisions. Twelve-plus years in film and television scenic departments, and most of what I age gets about four seconds of screen time. This thing actually got to stick around.

It was built for HBO's Watchmen, and when I saw this shot I couldn't leave it alone. I pushed the color the way the comics always did it — deep blues and purples shoved up against hot orange and yellow, with the sky doing most of the heavy lifting.

Now it's a puzzle. Fair warning: that sky is a little mean. I'm not sorry. This is your challenge. I already aged that damn thing years ago.

Pick 120, 252 or 500 pieces, depending on how much of your evening you'd like to lose. It ships in a gift-ready box with the finished image printed on the lid, so you can check your work.

The last two photos are mine as well, if you want to see what it actually looked like standing out there on that hill... the real wood, the real metal, before I got all artsy with it on my computer.

When you finish it, show me your work!
