I set this one on fire so you could put it back together.

That catapult was real, and it was brand new. Like, it literally worked!! Also built a week before the shoot from good ol' raw wood, bright clean metal, built from scratch and planted on a hill here in Atlanta. Which is a problem when the story says it's been sitting out in the weather for a few years.

That part was my job. I went after it with hammers, axes and a blow torch, mixed a stain and worked it into every inch of that wood, then aged all the metal down to something that looked like it had survived a century of bad decisions. Twelve-plus years in film and television scenic departments, and most of what I age gets about four seconds of screen time. This thing actually got to stick around.

It was built for HBO's Watchmen, and when I saw this shot I couldn't leave it alone. I pushed the color the way the comics always did it — deep blues and purples shoved up against hot orange and yellow, with the sky doing most of the heavy lifting.

Now it's a puzzle. Fair warning: that sky is a little mean. I'm not sorry. This is your challenge. I already aged that damn thing years ago.
